There Are Four Kinds of "Free" — and They Are Not Equivalent
Most listicles collapse everything into one bucket, which is why people download three tools in an evening and end up with nothing usable. "Free" here covers four genuinely different arrangements, and knowing which one you are looking at tells you most of what you need to know.
- Free and open source. No cost, no watermark, no expiry, no commercial restriction. You pay in learning curve and in the risk that the project goes quiet. VPT and MapMap live here.

- A trial wearing a free badge. Resolume and MadMapper are paid products. Their demos exist for evaluation, not for running a show, and anything you project through them announces that fact.
A fifth group deserves naming separately: free apps that are not mapping software at all. VLC plays anything and has no geometry tools. HeavyM Remote is free on both mobile stores, but it is a control surface for a HeavyM desktop session — the mapping happens on the computer, not on the phone. Both are useful; neither will warp video onto a curved column.

VPT — the most capable free option, and the least welcoming
VPT (Video Projection Tools) is free projector mapping software for macOS and Windows, built on the Max runtime by artist HC Gilje. It handles multiple layers, live camera sources, masks and per-surface warping, with no watermark and no restriction on commercial use. On raw capability it does more than most mobile mapping apps, paid ones included.
The cost is the interface. VPT looks like a patched instrument rather than a consumer application: dense panels, abbreviated labels, a mental model you learn rather than guess. Budget a weekend, not an evening.
MapMap — the gentlest free desktop start
MapMap is open source under the GPL and runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. You create a source (an image or a video), create a destination shape on the output, and drag its points until they match the physical object. Quads, triangles and mesh surfaces are all supported. That is more or less the whole app, which is exactly why beginners get somewhere with it.
Development has run in bursts, so check the state of the repository and confirm it still builds cleanly on your OS version before you rely on it. That caveat applies to a lot of free video mapping software, and it is the most common reason a promising tool disappoints.
TouchDesigner Non-Commercial — free forever, with a hard boundary
TouchDesigner's Non-Commercial licence costs nothing and does not expire. You get the real environment — generative visuals, audio reactivity, sensor input, network control — with two firm conditions: output resolution is capped, and paid work is not permitted. It is a superb place to learn and prototype, not a way to avoid paying for a commercial tool.

Free Projection Mapping Apps on Phones and Tablets
The mobile picture is thinner than the desktop one, and a search for a free projection mapping app on Android returns a lot of results that are not mapping tools at all — remote controls for desktop software, media players, and lighting-effect apps that throw a moving pattern with no geometry correction whatsoever. Three questions separate the real ones from the rest, and you can answer all three from the store listing and ten minutes of use.
- Does it warp, or only keystone? Keystone correction moves four corners to square up a trapezoid. Mapping subdivides the image into a grid and lets you drag interior points, which is the only way to follow a curve or an irregular edge. If the screenshots show four corner handles and nothing else, it is a keystone tool with a mapping headline.
- How does the picture reach the projector? This is the question people skip and then lose an evening to. Wired output means a USB-C or Lightning HDMI adapter, and on Android it means your phone actually supports video-out over its USB-C port — plenty of budget handsets do not. Wireless means AirPlay or Chromecast, which works but adds latency you will notice on touch-reactive or beat-synced content, so keep the projector on the same 5 GHz network and expect to rehearse with the lag rather than against it.
- What does the free tier take back? Watermark, gate, or saving — check which before you invest setup time, not after.
One practical footnote that applies to every phone-driven map: while the phone is driving the projector it is a display device for the whole show. Turn off auto-lock, silence notifications so a message banner does not appear four metres wide on someone's wall, and put it on a charger — sustained video-out plus wireless casting drains a battery faster than almost anything else a phone does.

The Hidden Costs of Free Software (All of It, Not Just Ours)
Every free tool bills you in a currency other than money. Knowing which currency is the whole trick.
- Time. The most capable free desktop tools have the steepest interfaces. A weekend learning VPT is a real cost, and for one Halloween window it is a bad trade.
- Rework. A tool that cannot save charges you the full setup again every session. Two hours of calibration you cannot store is worse value than most licences.
- Credibility. A watermark on a client's facade is not cosmetic. It reads as unlicensed software, and it is the kind of detail that costs you the repeat booking.
- Abandonment risk. Free projects go quiet. Confirm the tool still runs on your current OS — an install that worked two years ago is not evidence.
- Hardware, which is free for nobody. Software is the cheap part. As a rough working guide, something in the region of 3,000 lumens copes indoors with the lights down, and outdoors you want considerably more — the real number depends on your throw distance, surface colour and ambient light, so test before you commit.

Rather than crown a single best free projection mapping software, match the tool to the job. Five situations cover almost everything.
- A flat wall, projector square-on, one video. You may not need mapping software at all. VLC full-screen plus the projector's own keystone control is often the correct answer, and recognising that saves you an evening.

- Project it onto something deliberately awkward: a cardboard box on its corner, or a cylinder. Flat walls prove nothing.
- Corner-pin first, then subdivide to at least a 4×4 mesh and pull the interior points until the grid lines follow the physical edges. If the tool cannot do this, it is doing keystone correction, not mapping.
- Now close the app and reopen it. Whatever you have to redo is your real recurring cost, every single session.
- Finally, look at the projection from where the audience will stand. Watermarks and edge artefacts that vanish on a 6-inch screen are unmissable at 4 metres.

Four signals are worth watching for rather than discovering under deadline. Money changing hands: the moment someone pays you, watermarks and non-commercial licences are off the table. Repetition: map the same venue more than twice and the inability to save has already cost more than a licence. Scale: multi-surface installs with tracking or timed sequences depend on saved states and reliable exports. And deadline pressure, where a tool that fights you is a risk you carry into a live show.
Until one of those applies, free is genuinely fine. Learn on it, prototype on it, decorate your own house with it.
