ILW Light Mapper

If you searched for a light mapper app or lightmapper app and landed here, this is probably what you were after. ILW Light Mapper is free to download on iPhone, iPad and Apple Silicon Macs, and sells its unlocks as low-cost in-app purchases.

For the price it is a serious tool: multiple grids for complex setups, four-point corner adjustment, global offset, touch scale and rotation, and a Warp Painting mode that paints localised distortion into an area rather than nudging the whole quad. Masking is additive and subtractive, and you get hue, saturation and brightness controls, playback speed, transparent-black keying, timeline scrubbing, undo, and multiple named save slots. Content comes from your own H.264 MP4 files or an in-app library.

The catch is the same as Lazy Lighting's: it is Apple-only. If your team is mixed, or you need to hand a project to someone on Android or Windows, it does not solve that. But if everyone involved is on Apple hardware, it is cheap enough and capable enough to be worth trying before you spend more anywhere else.

Optoma Projection Mapper (formerly DynaMapper)

Worth clearing up first: DynaMapper and Optoma Projection Mapper are the same app. Reo Tek's DynaMapper was rebranded under the Optoma name, which is why an old bookmark usually redirects to the Optoma listing.

It is free, runs on Android, iOS and Amazon Fire tablets, and works with any projector — you do not need Optoma hardware. You get rectangular surfaces plus a rectangle whose sides bend into bezier curves, which beats a plain four-corner keystone and handles arched doorways and gentle curves well. There is a built-in material pack for colours and textures, plus optional themed content packs.

Where it stops is point-level control. Bending an edge is not the same as subdividing a surface and pushing individual vertices, so a column, a car bonnet or a stone façade will fight you. The current release also has no tracking or timeline sequencing. For a free app that is a fair trade, and it is still the sensible first install if you have never mapped anything.

HeavyM Remote

Frequently misunderstood, so plainly: HeavyM Remote is not a mapping app. It is a companion remote for HeavyM, which runs on a Windows or macOS computer. Install it on its own and there is nothing for it to control — the mapping engine lives on the desktop.

Judged for what it is, it is good. HeavyM itself is capable desktop software with a strong generative visuals library, and being able to walk to the far side of a room and trigger scenes from your phone removes the most annoying part of desktop mapping — the constant walk back to the laptop to nudge one corner. If you already own HeavyM, do not switch apps; install the remote. If you do not, you are buying into a laptop workflow and a desktop licence, which is the opposite of what most people in this search want.

Two separate things share this vocabulary, and mixing them up wastes an evening.

The first is projection mapping: a projector throws light onto a surface and software bends the image to fit. That is what every app above does. The second is pixel mapping for addressable LED strings — software that decides which bulb on a roofline turns which colour, driving physical lights rather than a projector. Both get called "light mapping", and the search results blend them.

The test is simple: if your output plugs into an HDMI port, you want a projection mapping app. If it plugs into a light controller, you want pixel-mapping software and nothing here will help. A 20-minute test before you commit to anything
