What MadMapper Is Genuinely Good At
Start here, because a comparison that skips this part is an advert. MadMapper, from GarageCUBE, has been a fixture of this field for well over a decade. It runs on macOS and Windows, and four of its strengths are things no lightweight mapper matches.
Syphon and Spout: live texture input
This is the one people underestimate. On macOS MadMapper receives Syphon frames; on Windows, Spout. Either way another application on the same machine — TouchDesigner, a game engine, a Processing sketch — can hand MadMapper a live video texture with no file in between. If your content is generated in real time rather than rendered to MP4 in advance, that connection is the workflow, and a tool that only imports media files cannot approximate it.
DMX, Art-Net and LED fixture control
MadMapper treats LED strips and lighting fixtures as mappable surfaces in the same project as your projector output, and it speaks DMX and Art-Net. A sculpture with LED tape down its edges and a projection across its face runs from one file, on one clock. For installation work and stage design, where the light and the video have to move together, this is often the entire reason the licence gets bought. Nothing in the lightweight category attempts it.
The material and shader system
MadMapper ships generative, shader-based materials: they are drawn at whatever size the surface needs rather than scaled up from a fixed-resolution file, they expose parameters you can move while the projector is lit, and those parameters can be driven from audio, MIDI or OSC. That makes it a content-creation tool rather than only a playback tool, and the difference shows up on site. When the surface turns out narrower than the plan or the content reads too busy from where the audience actually stands, a playback tool sends you back to the render queue; a generative one is a slider.
Control surfaces, and a decade of answers
MIDI and OSC input means a hardware controller or a second machine can run the show. And because MadMapper has been around so long, almost any question you have has already been asked by someone with a similar rig — a body of tutorials and forum threads that newer software cannot manufacture. If two or more of those four appeared in your last three jobs, stop here: nothing further down this page replaces them.
When You Actually Need a MadMapper Alternative
The honest case for a lighter tool is not that it is better. It is that a lot of real projection work uses only a narrow slice of what a desktop suite offers, and that slice is available with far less friction. Five situations where dropping a category is right:
- One projector, one surface, one evening. A shop window, a bar wall, a car, a school hall. Warp, mask, play a loop, go home. Multi-output blending and fixture control are complexity you will never open.
- You need to adjust from where the surface is. The slowest part of any map is the adjust-at-laptop, walk-over, squint, walk-back loop. Holding the controls at arm's length from the wall collapses it, and on an irregular object that loop is most of your setup time.
- The budget genuinely will not stretch. Community groups, students, a first paid gig, a charity event. Spending the software money on another thousand lumens usually improves the result more.
- You move between machines and platforms. A Mac at home, a borrowed Windows laptop at the venue, a tablet in the van. A tool that runs the same on all of them removes a class of problem.
- You map twice a year. A suite you use rarely is a suite you re-learn every time. Shallow tools stay learned.
One caveat: if cost is your only objection, look at MadMapper's own trial and whatever tiers it currently offers before rebuilding your workflow. Licensing changes, so check the current pricing page rather than a number from a forum post two years ago.
What to Look For in Any Alternative
Five checks separate a mapping tool from a video player with a warp slider. Run them on any candidate, ours included, before your first paid job depends on the answer.
1. Mesh warp quality
Corner pinning is the floor, not the feature; it handles a flat rectangle seen off-axis and nothing harder. The real question is what happens when the surface curves. Can you subdivide the image into a grid, and move individual interior points rather than only the edges? Some apps bend the outer edges with bezier handles, which looks like mesh warping in a screenshot and fails the moment you point it at a column. Test on a cylinder: a bin, a pillar, a cardboard tube.
2. Masking
Warping puts light where you want it; masking keeps it off the gutter, the window frame and the wall above the object. Look for arbitrary polygon masks that subtract from a layer, drawn after the warp is set. Without them you get a glowing rectangle on a wall rather than an object that appears lit from within, and spill onto the surround is what tells the audience they are looking at a projector.
3. Media formats — and whether you need live input
For most jobs, reliable H.264 MP4 playback and PNG with an alpha channel covers everything. Check that loops are clean: content running unattended for four hours needs a player that returns to frame one without a black flash. Then ask the harder question — do you need a live texture handed in from another application over Syphon, Spout or NDI? If yes, that alone eliminates the lightweight category and puts you back on desktop suites. Decide it now, not after buying.
4. Output options and projector count
How does the picture leave the machine? HDMI from a laptop, USB-C or Lightning HDMI from a phone or tablet, or wirelessly over AirPlay or Chromecast — fine for rehearsal, but it adds latency and depends on venue Wi-Fi. Then count outputs. One projector is a different product category from four edge-blended into one continuous image, and good warping in a single-output tool is no substitute for soft-edge blending.
5. Licensing model
Read this before you read the price. Perpetual licence, subscription, or one-time purchase inside a store? A perpetual licence keeps opening the project you built last year; a lapsed subscription can lock you out the week before a repeat booking. Is it tied to one machine — which matters the moment you want the map on the venue's spare laptop as a backup? None of this makes a tool wrong. It changes what "cheap" means over three years.

The third costs nothing and charges you in setup time and self-support instead.
Desktop suites in the same class
Resolume Arena (Windows and macOS) comes at mapping from the VJ side: a clip grid you trigger live, with the advanced output stage — mapping, warping and soft-edge blending across several projectors — that is the reason to take Arena over the cheaper Avenue tier. HeavyM (Windows and macOS) is built around ready-made generated visuals and a structure-first way of drawing surfaces, which usually gets a first result onto a wall faster than anything else in this group, and it has a companion mobile remote app for on-site tweaks. Millumin is macOS only and organised around a timeline of cues rather than a clip grid, which fits theatre and scripted performance better than club-style triggering. Isadora sits nearby for interactive work, where camera and sensor input drives the picture rather than a pre-cut file. TouchDesigner (Windows and macOS) is the most open-ended and the slowest to learn — a node graph you assemble yourself, which is why it is where generative and sensor-driven systems get built from scratch — with a free non-commercial licence for personal and learning use, subject to limits the commercial licence removes.
Be clear-eyed about this group: moving between them is a lateral move, not a saving. You pick one because its way of working suits your head, or because it does one specific thing you need. If the reason you are here is money, this group is mostly not the answer.
Lightweight cross-platform apps
These run the same mapping engine on desktop and on handheld devices, and they are where the real cost and complexity reduction lives. SurfaBeam sits here, on macOS, Windows, Android and iOS. Optoma Projection Mapper is free, runs on Android and iOS, and is built around rectangular surfaces with adjustable edges rather than a point-level warp grid — good for a flat window silhouette, much less so on a column. Free and open source
If you want a MadMapper free alternative with no strings, VPT (Video Projection Tools), MapMap and LPMT are the long-standing options — VPT free to download, MapMap and LPMT free and open source. Where SurfaBeam Fits — and Where It Does Not
SurfaBeam is a single-output cross-platform mapper: mesh warping, corner pinning, digital masking, multi-surface mapping, MP4 and PNG import, touch- and sound-reactive effects, hand, body and object tracking, visualizers and a Timeline editor, with AirPlay and Chromecast output alongside USB-C and Lightning HDMI. It runs on macOS and Windows as well as Android and iOS, with the same toolset on each. On Windows there are three installation routes — a direct .exe installer, the Microsoft Store, and Steam, where the base app is free and Pro is a one-time DLC rather than a subscription, compared in the Windows guide.
What it does not do, plainly: no Syphon or Spout input, so it cannot take a live texture from TouchDesigner or a game engine. No DMX or Art-Net, so it does not drive lighting fixtures. No shader-material authoring of MadMapper's kind. No multi-projector edge blending. If your work involves any of those, MadMapper or another desktop suite remains the right answer — and a large facade with several blended projectors belongs on a media server with an operator regardless.
The trade goes the other way on where you stand. The same project runs on a laptop and on a phone, so you build the map on a big screen and then walk to the wall with the controls in your hand for the calibration pass — the part a desktop-only tool makes slowest. On free versus paid: the free version gives you the full mapping, media, effects, tracking, visualizer and Timeline toolset, but it watermarks the projected image and exported video, shows an entry gate before mapping (subscribe, or watch a rewarded ad on Android), and does not save or load project files. Pro removes the watermark and the entry gate and unlocks Save, Load and Export, including Map Export to PNG — what you want when taking a calibrated map into After Effects. A Fair Way to Test a Replacement
Do this on a quiet afternoon with a projector, a wall and something curved, before a client is waiting. It takes an hour and tells you more than a fortnight of comparison tables.
- Place and lock the projector, as near perpendicular to the surface as the room allows, and set the output to its native panel resolution. Every result below is relative to that position.
- Corner pin a still image first. If the corners will not sit exactly on the surface edges, nothing after this matters.
- Put a curved object in front of it — a bin, a pillar, a rolled sheet of card — and subdivide. A 4×4 grid handles most gentle curves. Watch whether interior points move independently and whether the image stays stable while you drag them.
- Mask a hole. Draw a polygon over something that must stay dark and judge the edge at three metres, not on the preview.
- Loop a two-minute MP4 for twenty minutes and watch the seam. A one-frame black flash you barely notice on a screen reads as a fault at wall scale.
- Rebuild the same map from scratch, timed. The second attempt measures how fast the tool will be on the night.
- Change something with the projector already lit, the way you will have to at a venue. Tools differ enormously here and it rarely shows up in feature lists.
Score candidates on those seven, not on the length of their feature pages. Most of the gap between a good result and a bad one is warp fidelity, mask edges and playback reliability.
