What HeavyM Is Genuinely Good At
HeavyM is a desktop application for Windows and macOS with a clear point of view: most people who want a mapped show do not want to become video producers first. Three things follow from that, and the lighter category further down this page matches none of them.
Content you do not have to make
This is the whole pitch and it is a fair one. HeavyM ships a large library of generative effects — the company counts them in the thousands of combinations — that draw themselves onto the shapes you have mapped, at whatever size those shapes happen to be. You choose and tune rather than render. Without an animator, a motion-graphics habit or a folder of content already cut to the right aspect ratio, that removes the step that quietly kills most projects: the evening you find out the mapping was the easy part.
A real live-performance workflow
HeavyM organises a project into sequences — scenes, each with its own shapes, effects and media — which you trigger during the show or schedule in advance, with transitions between them. Alongside sits an audio analysis module where you pick an input, set gain and choose which frequency bands drive which parameters, plus tempo matching for rooms where a microphone will not help. That combination is a performance instrument rather than a playback tool, and it is why HeavyM turns up behind DJ booths and on small stages.
More than one projector, and pro output tools
HeavyM supports multiple outputs with edge blending and warping, so a wide surface can be driven by two or three projectors joined into one continuous image — a hard ceiling for every lightweight mapper, ours included. It also accepts images, video, GIFs, shaders and live streams, so it can sit downstream of content generated elsewhere.
If two of those three matter to your work, stay where you are or move sideways to another desktop suite. Nothing below replaces them.
When a HeavyM Alternative Actually Makes Sense
The case for something lighter is not that it does more. It is that a large share of real projection work uses a narrow slice of a suite like this. Five situations where changing category is right:
- There is no laptop in the plan. A window display, a market stall, a garden wall at Halloween. If the show has to run from something pocket-sized, a desktop-only program is not a candidate however good it is.
- The adjusting happens at the object, not at a desk. The slow part of any map is walk over, squint, walk back, nudge, repeat. Controls held a metre from the surface collapse that loop, and on an irregular object it is most of your setup time.
- You are playing your own video, not generating visuals. If the content is already an MP4 — a client's showreel, a rendered animation, a pumpkin face — the generative library is the part of the licence you never open.
- You map two or three times a year. Sequences, effect stacks and an audio-analysis module repay learning if you perform monthly, and are pure overhead if you do not.
- The budget is real and small. Money that does not go on software usually buys a brighter projector, and brightness improves most jobs more than features do — the projector guide covers what that buys.
What the HeavyM Licence Buys
Worth understanding before you go shopping, because it explains what a cheaper tool is and is not saving you. HeavyM sells tiers — Live and Pro for individuals, with an enterprise arrangement above — and the line between them is output capability: how many projector outputs you can drive, at what combined resolution, on how many machines. Payment is either spread monthly over a fixed run after which the licence is yours, or paid once up front. Terms move, so read them on HeavyM's own order page, not in a forum thread or this paragraph.
The demo matters too. It does not expire and includes the features, but it stamps the HeavyM logo onto the output and will not save or load projects — excellent for evaluating, useless for a booking. The HeavyM Alternatives Worth Knowing
They fall into three groups — same-class desktop suites, touch-native apps, and the free desktop tools — and picking the group settles more than picking a name inside it.
Desktop suites in the same class
MadMapper reaches further into installation work: it speaks DMX and Art-Net, so fixtures and projection live in one project, and it takes live textures over Syphon or Spout. Touch-native cross-platform apps
This is where the category change happens. SurfaBeam runs the same mapping engine on Android, iOS and iPadOS, macOS and Windows, so the machine running the show can be the one in your hand. Optoma Projection Mapper is a one-time purchase on Android, iOS and Amazon Fire, built around rectangle primitives with bendable sides — fine for a window silhouette, weaker on irregular scenes, and compared in our Optoma alternative piece. Lazy Lighting is phone and tablet only, drawing-led, and suits generated visuals more than imported video. And HeavyM Remote is not what it looks like: it controls HeavyM running on a laptop in the same room rather than mapping on its own, as the five-app comparison sets out. If your objection to HeavyM was the laptop, the Remote app does not remove it.
Free desktop tools
VPT, MapMap and LPMT cost nothing and do real warping and masking — these are not toys. What they charge instead is patience: interfaces built by developers for developers, thin documentation, and support that means hunting down a four-year-old forum thread. For a student project or a weekend experiment that is a fair trade. With a client waiting on the result, budget an extra evening for the learning curve before you commit to one.

Where SurfaBeam Fits — and Where It Does Not
SurfaBeam is a single-output cross-platform mapper. You add a surface, drag its four corner dots onto the real corners of the object, and apply an image or a video. For curved objects there is a WARP toggle: it turns each straight edge into a Bezier curve you bend with two orange tangent handles, revealed by double-tapping a corner, so the surface hugs a pillar or a car bonnet instead of sitting flat across it. Dragged corners snap magnetically onto a neighbour's corner, which is what keeps a multi-panel map seamless. Masking runs two ways: surfaces define what stays lit, and a custom mask cuts a surface to the light and dark of an image you pick, with a threshold slider and an invert toggle. Tracking and a Timeline editor sit on top; every panel and gesture is in the user guide.
Now the parts where HeavyM wins. SurfaBeam drives one projector; there is no edge blending across several. No DMX or Art-Net, no Syphon, Spout or NDI input, no shader authoring. Its music visualizer is not HeavyM's audio analysis: it loads its own audio file and generates one of twelve procedural modes on your surfaces — it does not make an imported MP4 pulse to the beat, so your own footage reacting to the room's music is a HeavyM job. And there is no live sequence-triggering layer; the Timeline is an arrangement you build in advance, not scenes you fire during a set.
Portability is its own subject. There is no cloud sync. With Pro, Save to Files writes a portable Scene_<date>.json that Load from Files reopens on another device — but it stores links to your media rather than the media itself, so the videos travel separately and the alignment needs rechecking against the new projector position. On free versus paid: the free tier is permanently free, not a trial, and includes the full mapping, media, effects, tracking, visualizer and Timeline toolset. It watermarks both the projected image and exported video, and an entry gate meets you before mapping — subscribe, or on Android watch a rewarded ad for a timed unlock. Saving, loading and video export are Pro; capturing a still of the projection is not. Pro is monthly, quarterly, yearly or one-time Lifetime on the App Store and Google Play, and a one-time DLC on Steam.
A Fair Way to Test the Swap
Do this on a quiet afternoon with a projector, a wall and something curved. An hour here beats a fortnight of comparison tables.
- Lock the projector first, as near perpendicular as the room allows. Every result below is relative to that position.
- Corner pin a still image first, then put something curved in front of it — a bin, a pillar, a rolled sheet of card. Corner pinning dressed up as mapping falls apart on a cylinder; the tool has to bend the edges.
- Mask something that must stay dark and judge the edge from three metres, not on the preview. Spill onto the surround is what tells an audience they are watching a projector.
- Loop a two-minute clip for twenty minutes and watch the seam. A black frame you would never catch on a laptop reads as a fault at wall scale.
- Rebuild the same map from scratch, timed — the second attempt is the honest measure of how fast the tool is on the night — then change something with the projector already lit, the way you will have to at a venue. Tools differ enormously here and it never appears in a feature list.

HeavyM itself is a Windows and macOS program, and HeavyM Remote controls it rather than mapping, so a laptop stays in the room either way.
